This story keeps turning up around the 'Net enough that it now has me worried.
One of the main reasons we are working to move to Canada is the distinct culture, economics and social views that distinguish the two countries.
Just the thought of "Deep Integration" is not a comforting one and we are definitely not in favour of it . . . .

When public officials are acting on matters of public policy, how can they claim a right to privacy? If they are acting as a private citizen and going to a bar mitzvah, then I can understand they have a personal life. But discussing major issues of national importance? Secret meetings with participants arriving in the middle of the night? Jeeee-zus!
OK, we must support the Council of Canadians along with Egale ...
"drf" and I are very impressed with the goals of the Council of Canadians.
We are concerned, though, that a membership in the organization while we are applying for PR status may not be a good idea. What do the rest of you think?? Would affiliation in certain organizations possibly hinder our immigration process?
gosh, I hadn't thought about it. We've already given to Egale and we're on their email and mailing lists. I was going to start supporting the Canadian Council.
I thought that participation before we're in Canada would show a seriousness and a commitment to what we hope will be our new home. Am I being naive?
Isn't it terrible that we have to be so skeptical, paranoid...? I've had similar questions, no answers. I think it's unlikely, one the application is in, that the consulate will bother to track down to whom one makes donations, etc., but I agree, it still hangs there in the back of your mind.
Maybe the bush-cheney monarchy has just made us too paranoid . . . But as I told Tom of Canadian Hope:
Reminds me of a quote from Susan Sontag:
"I envy paranoids; they actually feel people are paying attention to them."
