Our Four-Footed Child . . . .

Since you've shared in a big part of her life, we thought you should share in this, too.

My first night on "The Island" after being adopted from P.A.W.S in Ft. Walton Beach, FL.  I look like a "Beagle Mix" as advertised, right?

My personal pool on "The Island."

My favorite after dinner drink on "The Island."
My BIG ride across the continent barking at every large mammal that moved.
My first snow - EVER - in Vancouver.

My favourite trip - Tofino, BC - this past summer checking out a natural pool.

My happy face . . . .
Our little girl is gone - From this place, anyway.  Too many recurring tumours with a not-good prognosis.
We bet she's going to finally catch that squirrel she's been after all these years!
As her vet in Florida told her on her first visit while looking at us and then at her:  "You're gonna have a good life, Darlin'!"
We like to think she did . . . .

I'm very sorry for your loss.

In my lifetime, I have welcomed into my home and heart four dogs. Three of those are gone. They had good lives and they made my life better. I have one old timer now and I am grateful for everyday we have together.

Aw, that's sad.

Just before I read this, my dog came in from the back yard and trotted over to the couch to check on me before he laid down.

Amazing how willing they are to reach across the species barrier to befriend us, eh?

Get another one when you're ready. I think that's what they all want us to do.

I know your pain and it will never leave, you can never replace that friend, she`s tied to that chapter of your life and I suspect you have several chapters left..

Nothing makes a better Christmas present than welcoming in a new homeless charmer...

Gin Gin, a big smart orange Maine Coon helps soothe my tormented soul..

Thanks, everyone - 'S'pecially you, RossK, for the link from your place.

She was a Special Girl, for sure. We've had others, and they're all special in their own ways, aren't they?

No doubt we'll get another one day - Not right away, tho.

Gonna take some time for the hurt to recede.

The time will come at some point - It always does, thank goodness . . . .

Sorry so much. I have a rescue and if she died I would be devastated. RIP little dog! Catch that squirrel.

I'm always saddened to hear of someone losing a dog. I know some folks say "it's just a dog" but it has never felt like that to me. In my mind they truly are the best of friends.

Speaking of catching that squirrel, we had an old lab cross that after a lifetime of trying actually managed the feat in his final summer. I don't know how he did it but he did.

One of the great things about having a blog is being able to address the death of your dog in public. Well done.

Thanks again everyone. It helps to know there are others out there that can appreciate what our animal children mean to the family.

KenC: The story about your guy is great! Betcha our girl is still tryin,' tho - That's the fun of it in her mind . . . .

Aw shit. So sorry to hear this Bob. I'm reminded of Kipling's "Never give you heart to a dog to tear" when ever this kinda thing happens, and the Ken Kesey elaboration on it. Those little furry buggers burn so bright in their devotion to us and their enthusiasm for everything, it is so hard to believe that so much life can simply stop. You guys are in my thought this week and always.

Oh goodness, I feel terrible that I missed this post from a full year ago. I'm so very sorry for your loss - no less heartfelt for being so belated.

It's the only bad part of sharing our lives with animals, the inevitable heartbreak. So worth it, though.

I know your four-legged child had a wonderful life, and I know how much you'll miss her.
