Next Train to Canada, Please . . . .

H/T to Crooks and Liars for this heads up:

Fascist America, in 10 easy steps - By Naomi Wolf

If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy - but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.

As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated today in the United States by the Bush administration.

You can read the entire article here at the Guardian-UK.

Now can you see why we would like to vacate the US ASAP ? ? ? ?

The destruction of Citizen rights has been constant for the last 100 years in the U.S.

The founding fathers and the constituion all reverberated small government, separation of church and state, sound money, freedom of thought and action, in all it added up to a libertarians wet dream.

Since the Creation of the Fed, the Gov abandoned it's duty to control the money supply and sold it off to industry. Nixon's debauching of the currency buy breaking the gold standard killed off sound money as a pillar of the country.

Small gov is long since gone with washington interfering in states rights, regulation every aspect of life, and fighting wars with no authority. Such a large portion of the economy is gov spending, it is becoming the economy

Neocons have made religion a election issue.

Through regulation, interogation, surveilence etc , free thought, action and speach are almost gone too.

Unfortuately Fascists make lousy neighbours and unless a revolution stops this evolution(sorry, unitelligent design), we will eventually be under the U.S. boot.

Unfortunately some rights are also under attack in Canada, like political free speech.

Some guy who doesn't like he and his friends being called the "gang of Crookes" is suing the entire Internet to wipe the phrase out of existence.

This would be laughable except that if he could get IP numbers out of blog operators for this petty kind of thing, so could all sorts of other political players who intend to kill or torture or harass their critics.

The whole mess is sad and it may be that an unethical lawyer has figured out how to get fat fees out of a mentally ill rich person. It is very suspicious that this is the first lawsuit of its kind and that they filed so many of them before the first was even resolved and one of them just 15 minutes after the post named in it. This is not competent PR not legal advice. A countersuit against the plaintiff for defaming a defendant in the brief has already suceeded apparently. What kind of lawyer is so stupid that he puts obvious actionable statements or easily-exposed perjury in his statement of claim?

But if the guy won any suit or got any information out of this kind of filing, then, so could Putin or Cheney or Bush go to BC and file suits to get the same information about their critics.

And that's where real actual jack booted fascism really starts. The moment you can't state an opinion without being attacked in ways you can't ignore.
